What is the IB DP?
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) is a rigorous, internationally recognized pre – university qualification designed for students aged 16 – 19. It is more than just a curriculum – it is a philosophy of education that develops inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who are motivated to succeed.
The IB DP Framework
The IB DP is built on a unique educational model that ensures breadth and depth of learning:
Six Subject Groups:
1. Studies in Language and Literature – Developing sophisticated communication and analytical skill.
2. Language Acquisition – Building multilingual capabilities and cultural understanding.
3. Individuals and Societies – Exploring human behaviour, history and social systems.
4. Sciences – Investigating the natural world through inquiry and experimentation.
5. Mathematics – Developing logical thinking and problem – solving abilities.
6. The Arts – Expressing creativity and exploring human culture.
Students choose one subject from each group, studying three at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL), ensuring both specialization and a well – rounded education.
The Core Components
Theory of Knowledge (TOK) – A unique course that encourages students to reflect on the nature of knowledge and how we know what we claim to know.
Extended Essay (EE) – An independent, self – directed research project of 4000 words, developing university – level research skills.
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) – Experiential learning through creative pursuits, physical activities, and community service.
